Description
A very fine 19th Century in the manner of Augustus Pugin Irish Gothic Revival Walnut and Burr Walnut and Gilt Mirrored back twin pedestal hall bench with storage. The pedestals have marble tops and brass grills with shamrock decoration and two shelves in each. On top of each pedestal are two giltwood foliated carvings, each carved from one piece of wood. All the mercury glass is original to the piece as are the backboards. The unit retains its original key.
This piece was made for Shelton Abbey in County Wicklow, Ireland for the re-modelling of the Abbey in 1819 by Sir Richard Morrison. The piece was designed to reflect the the front entrance to the Abbey. The Abbey was built in 1770 and belonged to the Howard Family – the Earls of Wicklow.
